A casual remark by Spanish-born Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem has caused a high level diplomatic crisis between France and Morocco. Bardem apparently accidentally let slip some private comments by a French ambassador at a press conference in Paris recently.

Bardem was in Paris with his wife, fellow actor Penelope Cruz to promote the documentary film, “Sons of the Clouds: The Last Colony.” The film is directed by a fellow Spaniard, Álvaro Longoria. The documentary tells of the human rights abuses that happened in the Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony that was annexed by Morocco in 1975.

Bardem was trying to get the fact across that Paris had ignored the human rights abuses, and he referred to a conversation he had with France’s United Nations ambassador in the USA back in 2011.

What he said was that the ambassador had described Morocco as, "A mistress with whom we sleep every night, even if we are not particularly in love, but whom we must defend. In other words, we turn a blind eye."

Unfortunately these comments were then reported by French newspaper Le Monde and instantly created a stir with Morocco. A crowd of demonstrators went to the French embassy in Morocco on Tuesday, waving flags and shouting, “Morocco cannot be humiliated!” and “Ambassador coward!”

Following this, Morocco’s Minister of Communications, Mustapha Khalfi, demanded explanations, saying he wanted more than a simple statement or apology from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs apologizing for the words.

Whether the statement was falsely attributed or not, Khalfi said the comment that was shared with the media was "scandalous and unacceptable."

With relations between France and Morocco tense at the best of times, Bardem’s comments have made things even worse. Reportedly the two countries recently clashed over torture allegations that led the French police to question Moroccan officials in the Paris embassy.

Bardem believes that what he said was “no great novelty.” He told the Spanish newspaper El Pais, "I have not added anything new in that statement, everything is explained in the film.”

He said that it is desirable that the controversy was not used as a smokescreen for not discussing the real underlying problem, which is that France could help resolve the situation of human rights in Western Sahara, the Morocco-occupied territory.

"France and Spain objected last year to a historic US initiative to include a mechanism for monitoring human rights in the Sahara. The mission, which was commissioned by the U.N. is to be renewed in April and the only important thing is that the debate will focus on that,” the actor added.

“This is a widespread feeling that obviously is neither anti-French nor anti-Moroccan, it is simply pro-human rights."

Now President François Holland has had to intervene in the situation following Bardem’s comments. Holland contacted King Mohammed VI in what is being termed a “message of confidence and friendship to Morocco” and advises that the “misunderstandings have been cleared up."
