Talk then turns to his role as a father in The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, Ned Benson's project about a married New York couple told from both perspectives in two films - His and Hers (Jessica Chastain). "They offered me that about three years ago," reveals McAvoy. "But I said no, because I'd just had my first kid and thought there's no chance I'm doing this film about the death of a kid. No way! And then summertime last year they phoned up and said Joel Edgerton has pulled out and we've got exactly four days to get someone else in who can help us get us the same kind of funding that he was getting us - you interested now? And you know, my kid was a couple of years old at that point and doing very well and I felt more philosophical about it. I loved the script, it was beautiful... It's fucking harrowing emotionally, but that's kind of why, hopefully, it'll be good. Because we're talking about harrowing circumstances, and adult love and the trauma that adult love can inflict upon each other because it's such a powerful thing."
